Chara is a genus of green algae often referred to as "stoneworts."It is considered monoecious (or homothallic) because both the male and female reproductive organs are located on the same plant body.Specifically, the male sex organ (the antheridium or globule) and the female sex organ (the oogonium or nucule) are found at the same node.In many species of Chara, the oogonium is positioned above the antheridium on the same plant.
