Predation is a population interaction in which only one species benefits while the other is negatively affected or harmed. Predators help to maintain the ecological balance among organisms by consuming prey and by altering prey behavior and prey habitat selection. Predators also help in maintaining species diversity in a community, by reducing the intensity of competition among competing prey species. Predation might lead to extinction of a species. For example, if a predator is too efficient and overexploits its prey, then the prey might become extinct and following it, the predator will also become extinct for lack of food.
