The molar volume of liquid benzene
(density = 0.8 gm/ml) increases by a factor of 2750 as it vapourises at 20ºC and that of liquid benzene (density = 0.867 gm/ml) increases by a factor of 7720 at 20ºC. A solution of benzene and toluene at 20ºC has a vapour pressure of 46.0 torr. What is the mole percentage of benzene in the solution in nearest possible integers ?

55
Sol. In vapour phase 1 mole or 78 gm benzene has a volume at 20ºC =
× 2750 ml
1 mole of 92 gm toluene has volume at 20ºC
=
× 7720 ml
∴
×
= 1 × 0.0821 × 293
pº B = 74.74 mm
Similarly,
×
= 1 × 0.0821 × 293
Pº T = 22.37 mm.
∴ 46 = 74.74 x B + 22.37 (1 – x B )
or x B = 0.55
or % x B = 55
