There are basically two steps in the extraction of Al viz.,
(I) Preparation of pure alumina.
(II) Electrolysis of Alumina.
When in the bauxite ore, silica is present in the greater amount, the pure alumina is prepared from the bauxite ore by the Serpeck's process.

Sol. In the serpeck''s process, the temperature used is 1800ºC, SiO 2 is reduced to Si and Si volatilises off.
SiO 2 + 2C ⎯→ Si + 2CO
(ii)
Sol. O 2 (g) produced at anode oxidizes graphite electrode to CO and CO 2 .
