The carbonyl compounds having atleast one ‐hydrogen atom undergo condensation reaction in presence of dilute NaOH solution. This reaction is called as aldol condensation reaction. As formaldehyde (HCHO) has no ‐hydrogen atom attached to carbonyl group, it does not respond to this reaction.
