In the reaction : 2Al + Cr 2 O 3
Al 2 O 3 + 2Cr, 49.8 g of Al reacted with 200.0 g Cr 2 O 3 . How much grams of reactant remains at the completion of the reaction ?

(Atomic weight of Al and Cr = 27 and 52, M.wt. of Cr 2 O 3 = 152)
Moles of Al =
= 18.4 mol

= 9.2 mol of Cr 2 O 3
Moles of Cr 2 O 3 =
= 1.31 mol
Since 2 mol Al is required for 1 mol of Cr 2 O 3 .
So, Al is the limiting reagent and Cr 2 O 3 is in excess. Moles of Cr 2 O 3 is excess
= (1.31 – .92) = 0.4 mol
Weight of excess Cr 2 O 3 = 0.4 × 152 = 60 g Cr 2 O 3
