Atomic size of nitrogen is very less. Hence ‘N’ atom can approach close to another ‘N’ atom. This facilitates the lateral overlap of the p-orbitals forming π -bonds. Due to large size, other atoms of the same group form only single bonds, but not multiple bonds.
