IB Board Class 11 – Diploma Programme (DP Year 1)

Programme Overview:

  • IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a two-year academically challenging programme for students aged 16–19.
  • Class 11 is DP Year 1, the foundation year of this globally recognized qualification.
  • Students choose 6 subjects from designated groups and complete 3 core components.

Key Objectives of the IB DP:

  • Foster in-depth academic exploration across disciplines.
  • Build skills in research, time management, critical thinking, and global awareness.
  • Prepare students for university-level science, medicine, and engineering.
  • Encourage ethical learning through real-world, service-based projects.

Medical & Non-Medical Streams Structure

Students must choose one subject each from the following six groups:

Note:

  • Medical aspirants generally choose Biology + Chemistry + Math (SL or HL).
  • Non-Medical aspirants generally go with Physics + Chemistry + Math (HL or SL).
  • Group 6 is flexible and can be replaced by another Science or Individuals & Societies subject.

Subject Levels

Each subject is taken at:

  • Higher Level (HL) – 240 hours over 2 years
  • Standard Level (SL) – 150 hours over 2 years

Students must choose at least 3 HL subjects and 3 SL subjects.

Core Components of the DP

These are mandatory for all students, irrespective of stream:

  1. Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
    Reflective essay and oral presentation exploring how knowledge is formed.
  2. Extended Essay (EE)
    A 4,000-word independent research paper in a subject of choice (often science-based for medical/non-medical students).
  3. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
    Students must engage in creative pursuits, physical activities, and community service.

Grading System

Each subject is graded on a scale of 1 to 7:

  • 7 = Excellent
  • 1 = Poor

Up to 3 bonus points are awarded based on performance in TOK and EE.

Maximum Total = 45 Points

  • 6 Subjects × 7 = 42
  • TOK + EE = 3 bonus

Pass Criteria:

  • Minimum 24 points overall
  • At least 12 points from HL subjects
  • No subject score below 3
  • CAS completion is mandatory

Assessment Overview

1. Internal Assessments (IAs):

  • Each subject has a practical/essay-style IA component.
  • Accounts for 20–30% of the final subject grade.

2. External Assessments:

  • Final exams at the end of DP Year 2 (Class 12).
  • Includes structured response, data-based questions, and essay-type questions.
