ICSE Class 10 Complete Student Guide (2025 Edition)

Overview of ICSE Class 10

  • Board: CISCE (Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations)
  • Level: Secondary Education (End of High School)
  • Medium of Instruction: English only
  • Academic Year: April to March
  • Exam Conducted: ICSE Board Examination (Feb–March)
  • Certification: Indian Certificate of Secondary Education

Subject Groups and Structure

Students must study and be examined in seven subjects, divided into three groups:

Group I – Compulsory Subjects

(All subjects in this group are compulsory and have both internal and external assessments.)

  • English
  • Second Language (Hindi / Sanskrit / French / Other approved Indian or foreign languages)
  • History, Civics & Geography

Group II – Choose any 2 subjects

Examples of commonly offered subjects:

  • Geography (if not taken in Group I)

Group III – Choose 1 subject

Project-based / practical-heavy subjects:

  • Technical Drawing
  • Yoga / Fashion Designing (Subject to school offering)

Internal and External Assessment Split

Note: Internal assessment includes practicals, projects, assignments, and regular tests.

Internal Assessment Details

  • English: Speaking and Listening (ASL), project work
  • Languages: Composition, grammar, oral skills
  • Science: Experiments, practical notebooks, viva
  • Mathematics: Project work, investigations
  • Group III Subjects: 100% project/practical-based; must be maintained throughout the year

Pass Criteria & Promotion Rules

  • Minimum passing marks: 33% in each subject
  • Students must pass in: English (compulsory)
  • Promotion is based on:
    • Overall performance in all subjects
    • Consistent performance in unit tests, pre-boards, and internals
    • Minimum attendance of 75%

Grading System (Internal Assessments)

Grades are given based on performance in internal assessments:

A 90 – 100%
B 75 – 89%
C 56 – 74%
D 35 – 55%
E Below 35% (Fail)

Final results are declared with subject-wise marks and division (Distinction, First, Second, Pass).

Final Board Exam Preparation Strategy

Pre-Board Exams

  • Usually held in December/January
  • Pattern same as board exam
  • Crucial for practice and internal mark calculation

Board Exams

  • Held in February–March
  • Subjective + objective questions
  • Questions based mostly on prescribed ICSE textbooks and project-based learning

Tips for ICSE Class 10 Students

  • Stick to ICSE-prescribed textbooks (like Selina, Evergreen, Frank, APC)
  • Practice mapwork in Geography regularly
  • Write projects neatly and in your own words
  • Keep lab records up to date (especially for Science and Group III)
  • Focus on grammar and literature in English & Second Language
  • Revise concepts regularly, not just before exams
  • Use flowcharts/diagrams in Science and Geography answers
