Cambridge A Level (Grade 12)

Overview:

  • Cambridge AS Level is typically taken in Grade 11, and A Level in Grade 12. Together, they form a complete pre-university qualification.
  • A Level is the full qualification, combining AS + A2.
  • A2 (Grade 12) extends the AS content with advanced, application-based topics.
  • Final A Level grades are calculated after combining both parts (AS + A2).
  • Exams held in May/June or Oct/Nov.

Medical Stream Subjects (Recommended):

Subject Content Extension
Biology Photosynthesis, respiration, inheritance, evolution, ecology, hormones, homeostasis
Chemistry Organic chemistry, transition metals, instrumental analysis
Physics Thermal physics, circular motion, nuclear physics, medical physics
Optional: Mathematics Advanced calculus, vectors, algebra
Optional: Psychology Application of theory, studies, experiments

Non-Medical Stream Subjects (Recommended):

Subject Content Extension
Mathematics Complex numbers, matrices, integration, differentiation, vector algebra
Physics Electronics, electromagnetism, quantum physics, astrophysics
Chemistry Organic mechanisms, reaction kinetics, equilibria
Optional: Computer Science System design, algorithms, databases, networking
Optional: Economics Macro & microeconomics, policy, global trade

Students typically choose 4 subjects at AS Level, which may be continued to A Level. Some universities require full A-Level certification in specific subjects.

A2-Level Assessment Format:

  • Paper-based, subject-specific exams
  • Longer and more analytical in nature than AS
  • Practical components in science (timetabled or written alternatives)
  • Coursework remains in project-based subjects only (e.g. Global Perspectives, Art)

Key Differences Between AS and A Level

Feature AS Level A Level (Full)
Year Grade 11 Grade 12
Depth of Study Introductory/intermediate Advanced and application-based
Duration 1 year 2 years (AS + A2)
Use Can be standalone or part of A Level Required for most global universities
Number of Subjects 4–5 recommended 3–4 (continued from AS Level)
Assessment Style Mostly written exams Written exams + deeper conceptual analysis

Exam Pattern (Assessment Format)

The structure may vary slightly by subject, but most follow this general format:

Component Details
Written Exams Paper-based, structured questions, multiple-choice, and long answers
Coursework For subjects like Art, Global Perspectives, ICT, English Literature
Practical Assessments In sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) – either lab-based or written alternative
Oral Exams For languages (Speaking & Listening papers)
Exams are conducted twice a year:
  • May/June session
  • October/November session

Grading System

IGCSE grades range from A* (highest) to G (lowest). U means "Ungraded."

Grade Meaning
A* Outstanding performance
A Excellent
B Very good
C Good
D Satisfactory
E Basic pass
F Weak
G Very weak
U Ungraded (failed to meet minimum criteria)
  • Grades A* to C are considered strong passes.
  • Grades D to G are lower tier passes, though accepted in some contexts.

Academic Guidelines

  • Students must choose subjects aligned with their future university or career path
  • Science students aiming for engineering or medicine should take Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics or Biology
  • Coursework and projects must be completed under school guidance and deadlines
  • Subject combinations should be chosen based on aptitude, interest, and admission requirements

Recommended Study Practices

  • Maintain regular revision schedules for each subject
  • Practice from past papers and timed exam simulations
  • Review marking schemes to understand scoring criteria
  • Prepare practical notebooks and lab reports thoroughly
  • Seek teacher feedback on written responses and project drafts
