A Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) (since 2005 renamed Joint Entrance Examination- Advanced (JEE-Advanced)) is an Indian annual test, which evaluates the talent as well as the skill of the applicants in physics, chemistry and mathematics. It is hosted on a rotating basis with the Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the qualifying candidates of the Joint Entrance Examination -Main (except in the case of foreign students) and the students who have previously or subsequently acquired OCI/PIO cards) to the zonal Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) of seven in all: IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and IIT Guwahati.
The score in the JEE-Advanced exam is the only basis of admission in other universities like the Indian Maritime University Kolkata, the Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology and the Indian Institute of Space Technology. Indian Institute of Science is another place where score in the JEE-Advanced examination is put into consideration by the college. Admission to non Indian universities like the University of Cambridge and the National University of Singapore also make use of the JEE-Advanced score as a potential basis of admission.
The pattern of JEE Advanced 2025 exam has been published and this year is associated with a significant alteration in the framework of Paper 2. In comparison to the past years when Paper 2 was separated into four parts, Paper 2 under JEE Advanced 2025 has only three parts as per Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. This architecture makes the aspirants look and in the process this again reminds them how volatile and uncertain the JEE Advanced paper pattern can be.
The exam will as usual be made up of two compulsory papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2 each taking three hours. The overall duration of the test is six hours and the students should be present in both papers in order to be ranked. The test will be online based (Computer-Based Test) and composed in English and Hindi.
JEE Advanced has maintained its reputation as a very tough engineering entrance test in the world not only due to its level of difficulty but also due to its constantly changing pattern. The types of questions, the format of sections, and marking scheme, and mark weightage are all subjected to change on an annual basis, and thus it is important to be up to date and adaptable in approach in preparing. It is not only a test of knowledge, but also of conceptual clarity, time management as well as mental adaptability.
Here you will get a breakdown of paper 1 and paper 2, recent amendments, the nature of questions and marking patterns; you will be armed enough to take the challenge directly.
JEE (Advanced) is an examination that is taken in two 3-hour papers Paper-1 and Paper-2 (both mandatory) containing questions based on three major subjects: physics, chemistry, and mathematics. The organizing institute also changes the type, the amount of questions which are being asked in the paper, the total marks and the marking scheme which is used in a paper each year unlike most of the other exams in which the number of questions being asked in each paper is set at a rate of about 3638 questions. A case in point is the 2021 JEE-Advanced exam where 38 questions (19 questions in Paper-1 and 19 questions in Paper-2) were asked in each of the three subjects.
Every paper of every subject is normally subdivided into 4 sections In JEE adv. 2025 in 1st paper, every subject is subdivided into 4 sections and in 2nd paper, every subject is subdivided into 3 sections (scoring may differ annually):
| Section | Problem Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 single-correct MCQs |
• +4 marks for every correct answer • 0 marks for unanswered questions • -1 mark for every wrong answer |
| 2 | 3 question stems with 2 questions per stem (numerical answers with two decimal places) |
• +2 marks for every correct answer • 0 marks otherwise |
| 3 | 6 multi-correct MCQs |
• +4 marks if (all) the correct option(s) is(are) chosen • +3 marks if all the options are correct but only 3 options are chosen • +2 marks if 3 or more options are correct but only 2 correct options are chosen • +1 mark if 2 or more options are correct but only 1 correct option is chosen • 0 marks if unanswered • −2 marks if at least 1 incorrect option is chosen |
| 4 | 3 fill-in-the-blank questions (answers are non-negative integers) |
• +4 marks for a correct answer • 0 marks otherwise |
| 5 | Integer answers type questions |
• +4 marks for a correct answer • 0 marks otherwise |
| 6 | Numerical answer based questions |
• +3 marks for correct answer • 0 marks otherwise |
Some previous year papers also included matrix match type questions instead of single-correct multiple choice questions.
The JEE Advanced is the most challenging engineering test in India to get into the IITs, and is taken after a period of one year by one of seven IITs as the Joint Admission Board (JAB).
The exam contains two mandatory papers, one of which is Paper 1 and the other Paper 2 with a time duration of three hours, adding up to six hours.
In 2025, the Paper 2 was designed to have three sections, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics compared to the previous years when it had four sections.
