When a magnetic compass is placed at a neutral point, no force acts on it. Certain points in the field due to magnet may be completely neutralized by the horizontal component of earths magnetic field and are called neutral points. When magnet is placed in the magnetic meridian with north pole pointing towards north them neutral points are formed symmetrically on either side of magnet on its equatorial line (as shown).
