Physics Thermodynamics Mix Comprehension (MCQ)

A mercury thermometer is made of glass having cross–sectional inner hole equal 0.1 mm 2 . Volume of mercury in the bulb is 2.22 cc. Following graph shows variation of length of mercury column inside thermometer with change in temperature in two different scale, scale A (°A) and scale B (°B).

(i) Both scale A and scale B agrees at temperature-

The correct answer is:
CHECK THE SOLUTION.

Ans.

(i)

Sol. Variation of length of Hg column with temperature

Scale A: °A = 2.5 λ – 25 … (i)

Scale B: °B = 0.5 λ – 10 … (ii)

[Where λ = length of Hg column in mm]

Both scale will agree when °A = °B

⇒ °A = °B = – 6.25°

(ii)

Sol. From equation (i) and (ii)

=

At steam point °A = 100°

⇒ B° = 15°

(iii)

Sol. Coefficient of cubical expansion of Hg

γ = =

= × 1.8 × 10 –4 /°A
