Sol. Now, the reaction for the second stage is:

1 T 3 + 1 D 2 → 2 He 4 + 0 n 1 + E 2

∴ Δ m = (3.016049 + 2.014102) – (4.002603 + .008665) = 0.01888u

∴ E 2 = 0.01888 × 931 = 17.587 MeV

(ii)

Sol. Total energy released = E 1 + E 2 = 4.033 + 17.587

= 21.62 MeV

∴ Energy released /deuteron =

= 7.207 MeV

(iii)

Sol. % of rest mass of deuterium released

= = 0.384 %
