Physics Electrostatics Potential & Capacitance Electric Potential and Potential Difference MCQ (Single Correct)

Four charges + q, + q, - q, - q are fixed respectively at the corners of A, B, C and D of a square of side ‘a’ arranged in the given order. Calculate the electric potential and intensity at O (Center of square). If E and F are the midpoints of sides BC, CD respectively, what will be the work done by external agent in carrying a charge Q slowly from O to E and from O to F?

The correct answer is:
CHECK THE SOLUTION.

(0, , 0, where k = )

Sol. (i) Potential at the point O = = 0 V

(ii) → Electric field at point O

As shown from figure. E net (at O) = E 0 = 4 E cos 45º (where, E = Electric field due to individual charge at point O)

∴ E 0 = = (in shown direction)

(iii) V E = 0 (from diagram symmetry)

∴ W ext (O → E) = Q (V E – V 0 ) = Q (0 – 0) = 0 J

W ext (O → F) = Q (V F – V 0 ) = Q J

= J
