A capacitor can be given only a limited quantity of charge because every dielectric is limited by the dielectric strength of medium between the plates. The dielectric strength is a maximum value of electric field that it can handle without breakdown. Beyond this field the dielectric no more behave as dielectric but it conduct electric and become conductor.
