Sol. The optical path difference at P is

Δ x = S 1 P – S 2 P = d cos θ

Since cos θ 1 – for small θ ,

Therefore, Δ x = d

= d where D + d D

For nth maxima, Δ x = n λ

or d = n λ

y = radius of the nth bright ring = D

At the central maxima, θ = 0.

Δ x = d = n λ

or n = = = 1000

∴ for the closest second bright ring, n = 998.

Putting values, r = 6.32 cm.
