Physics Ray Optics Refraction in General, Refraction at Plane Surface and T.I.R. MCQ (Single Correct)

A ray of light passes through four transparent media with refractive indices μ 1, μ 2, μ 3 & μ 4 as shown in the figure. The surfaces of all media are parallel. If the emergent ray CD is parallel to the incident ray AB, we must have:

A
μ 1 = μ 2
B
μ 2 = μ 3
C
μ 3 = μ 4
D
μ 4 = μ 1

The correct answer is:
D

Applying Snell’s law at B and C ,

µ sin i = constant or

µ 1 sin i B = µ 4 sub i C

But since AB | | CD

∴ i B = i C

or µ 1 = µ 4

The Snell’s law, which the students read in their plus two syllabus µ = comes

from µ sin i = constant

µ 1 = µ 1 sin i 1 = µ 2 sin i 2

µ 2 = µ or sin i = µ sin r

or ;k µ =
