Physics Center of Mass Motion of Centre of Mass MCQ (Single Correct)

Two particles of equal mass m are projected form the ground with speed v 1 and v 2 at angle θ 1 and θ 2 ( θ 1 , θ 2 ≠ 0, 180º) as shown in figure. The centre of mass of the two particles

A
will move in a parabolic path for any values of v 1 , v 2 , θ 1 and θ 2
B
can move in a vertical line
C
can move in a horizontal line

The correct answer is:
B

Centre of mass will move in a vertical line if v 1 cos θ 1 = v 2 cos θ 2 . Otherwise for any other values it will follow a parabolic path.

= V 1 cos θ 1 + (V 1 sin θ 1 – gt) Parabolic path

= – V 2 cos θ 2 + (V 2 sin θ 2 – gt) Parabolic path

 m 1 = m 2 = m

= =

v 1 cos θ 1 – v 2 cos θ 2 = 0 ⇒ v 1 cos θ 1 = v 2 cos θ 2

then path may be straight line.
