When two SHM of different amplitudes and same period are superposed, the resulting motion is in general elliptical. When the phase difference is 0 or 180 0 , the motion will be a straight line. When the phase difference is 90 or 270 0 , the motion will be an ellipse whose axes coincide with coordinate axes. If the amplitudes are the same and the phase difference is 90 0 or 270 0 , the motion will be circular.
