Physics Electrostatics Potential & Capacitance Electric Field and Potential,Defference,Energy and Dipole MCQ (Single Correct)

A non conducting ring of radius R has uniformly distributed positive charge. A small part of the ring, of length d, is removed (d << R). The electric field at the centre of the ring will now be –

A
Directed towards the gap, inversely proportional to R 3
B
Directed towards the gap, inversely proportional to R 2
C
Directed away from the gap, inversely proportional to R 3
D

The correct answer is:
A

Let Q = charge on entire ring.
Charge on section removed

For the complete ring, field at C is zero. Let E 1 and E 2 be the fields at the centre due to dQ and due to the remaining ring respectively.
and E 2 must be equal and opposite.
E 2 is directed towards gap .
