Sol. Ice melts at 0ºC only if the necessary amount of heat be imparted to it–about 80 calories to every gramme of ice–while water will only freeze if the same amount of heat is taken from it. Therefore if the vessel is not heated or cooled from outside, the water will not freeze and the ice will not melt. A mixture of water and ice at 0ºC will be in ‘thermodynamic equilibrium’.
