It is obvious that acceleration of both the blocks is same in magnitude.

F – T = m 2 a [Newtons second law for m 2 ]

T – m1g = m 1 a [Newtons second law for m 1 ]

After adding the above equations.

F – m 1 g = (m 2 + m 1 ) a

– m 1 g = (m 2 + m 1 ) a

a = –

The value of a is –ve it means

a = in the direction opposite to assumed direction
