A disc is kept on a smooth horizontal plane with its plane parallel to horizontal plane. A groove is made in the disc as shown in the figure. The coefficient of friction between mass m and surface of the groove is 2/5 and sin θ = 3/5. Find the acceleration of mass with respect to the frame of reference of the disc.

(10 m/s 2 )
Sol.

Solving from the frame of disc

Let acceleration of the block relative to the disc is a then
25 m cos θ – μ N = m a ..........(i)
Now, there will be two normal as there are two contacts (i) Horizontal and (ii) Vertical
N H = 25 m×sin θ = 25 × m ×
= 15 m
N V = mg = 10 m
f = μ N H + μ N V =
(15 m) +
(10 m) = 10 m
from (i) we get a =
= 10 m/sec 2
