Physics Electrostatics Potential & Capacitance Capacitance MCQ (Single Correct)

(i) Find out the charges on the three capacitors connected to a battery as shown in figure. Take C 1 = 1.0 µF, C 2 = 2.0 µF, C 3 = 3.0 µF and V = 20 volt.

(ii) Find out the work done by the battery during the process of charging (initially all the capacitors are uncharged)

(iii) Find out the total energy stored in the capacitors.

The correct answer is:
CHECK THE SOLUTION.

[(i) 20 µC, 40 µC, 60 µC

(ii) 2400 µJ

(iii) 1200 µJ]

Sol.

Q 1 = C 1 V = 1 × 20 = 20 µC

Q 2 = C 2 V = 2 × 20 = 40 µC

Q 3 = C 3 V = 3 × 20 = 60 µC

Q t = 120 µC

W battery = Q t V = 120 × 20 = 2400 µJ

U C = C 1 V 2 + C 2 V 2 + C 3 V 2 = (C 1 + C 2 + C 3 )V 2

= (1 + 2 + 3) (20) 2 = 1200 µJ.
