Physics Ray Optics Refractive Index MCQ (Single Correct)

A convex lens is held 45 cm above the bottom of an empty tank. The image of a point at the bottom of the tank is formed 36 cm above the lens. Now a liquid is poured into the tank to a depth of 40 cm. It is found that the distance of the image of the same point on the bottom of the tank is 48 cm above the lens. Find the refractive index of the liquid.

The correct answer is:
CHECK THE SOLUTION.

Sol. From the given condition,

u = – 45 cm, v = 36 cm

= + or f = 20 cm

Now let µ be the refractive index of the liquid. Then in the present case,

u = – ; v = + 48 cm; f = 20 cm

= +

or = 0.029 or 5 + = 34.29

or = 29.28 or µ = 1.365
