Let the velocities of plank and body of mass

move with speed v 1 and v 2 after collision as shown.

From conservation of momentum

mv – 2v = mv 1 + v 2

or 2v 1 + v 2 = 0 ..........

From equation of coefficient of restitution

e = 1 = ⇒ v 2 – v 1 = 3v ..........

Solving 1 and 2 we get

v 1 = v
