Physics Center of Mass Conservation of Linear Momentum MCQ (Single Correct)

A (trolley + child) of total mass 200 kg is moving with a uniform speed of 36 km/h on a frictionless track. The child of mass 20 kg starts running on the trolley from one end to the other (10 m away) with a speed of 10 m s –1 relative to the trolley in the direction of the trolley’s motion and jumps out of the trolley with the same relative velocity. What is the final speed of the trolley? How much has the trolley moved from the time the child begins to run and just before jump?

The correct answer is:
CHECK THE SOLUTION.

9m/s, 9m

m c = 20 kg

m T = 180 kg

P i = 200 × 36 × = 2000 kg m/sec

just before jump V bg = + = (10 + V T )

So M T V T + m c V c = P f = P i

180V T + 20 × (10 + V T ) = 2000

V T = = 9 m/sec.

Time taken to cover 10 m ⇒ t = = 1 sec.

distance covered by trolly = 9 × 1 = 9 m.
